In here you can find anything that was fired from the hip so to speak during my ongoing strive for improvement. Whatever photo study, digital plein air, sketch, speedpainting or study of an inspiring piece of art I deem at least halfway presentable should - over time - find it’s way into this folder. I hope in the long run a trend will emerge towards growing in skill and speed… Fingers crossed!
Technique: Junk Bot 06 // Technique / Brushwork / Abstraction
It has been a while since the last Junkbot so I had hoped that I could remedy this inside some 90+ minutes! I took this for a reason to grab one of my recent studies (hoo hoo hoo), because I liked the palette and the mood, and tried to adapt it to a different context.
So this junk bot labors at the water’s edge in some favela slums after a big storm to clear a pier from rubbish, debris and driftwood. I like his rough shape, the robot arm with camera etc. as a kind of a head inside the protective cage, and the “hands” that remind me of Aliens’ Power Lifter :D.
As always, constructive criticism is very welcome :)
Study: Jamie Jones 01 // Study / Colors / Brushes
My study streak is not breaking off any time soon it seems and at one point or another my subject had to be the one and only Jamie Jones. Looking forward to doing more of those since there is so much to learn.

March with Mech Support // Scene / Scifi / Speedpainting
What can I say? Every now and then I have to get some cliche sci-fi stuff out of my system, too ;). So here it is for this time, a soldier platoon marching through some forest with the supporting presence of a bigger robotic unit.

Study: John Park Study 02
A quick study of John Park’s amazing painting with a column of knights riding through a forest with quite magical light mood. Check it out when you got the chance, it is so full of layers and layers and I wish I would have had more time for this...

Photo Study: Red Rusts Faster // Study / Abstraction / Shape
The decay and decomposition of such a beautiful man-made thing is always interesting as well as a bit sad. Somehow peaceful as well. These days I have try an intact car as well, I think

Technique Test: Amphibious Steamtanks // Speedpainting / Abstraction / Technique
Last Saturday morning was just perfect for another stab at my paintifying technique. This one leaned on the recent photo study ‘Flotilla’. First I did some quick design sketches for an amphibious scout steamtank (Since I wanted to practice painting smoke and steam as well, together with water) and then build the scene. Again first as a speedpainting, then I tried to give it a more painterly look.

… And for a very busy work day, when I don’t get to fiddle around with new stuff so much, a nice photo study has to suffice. Even though it is almost monochromatic in it’s subtle colors, this is still a great scene. Love the light :)

Technique Test: Fjord Skirmish // Speedpainting / Abstraction / Technique
After so many studies recently, I wanted to fiddle around a bit with some painting technique I wanted to test. So I used the palette of the study ‘Ship & Fjord’ to do a speedpainting with a similar setting and afterwards tried to convert it to a more painterly look than my usual workflow incorporates. So I ended up with a little surprise boarding fun between two viking ships and added some red cloth / paint to one of the parties to mix it up a little.

Photo Study: Ship & Fjord // Study / Shapes / Abstraction
As the detail fiddler that I am, this subject matter seemed perfect to push for a little detachment and looseness. I’d say it didn’t go perfect but felt a lot less OCD than usual :D.
Oh, by the way, it dawned on me that I forgot so far to ask for constructive criticism if some digital passerby should have a good comment ;)
Photo Study: Bounce Light House // Study / Shapes / Abstraction
Wonderful bounce light into that building side, mixing it up with that blue ambient light. Great image :) Plus the brush strokes finally starting to come a bit loose. Ah well that needs some more studying for sure...
Photo Study: Winter Sun Warship // Study / Shapes / Abstraction
Came across this photo and immediately had to grab it for a study. Such great light and feeling to it! Some fun 60 min again :)
Photo Study: House in Morning Sun // Study / Shapes / Abstraction
This photo reminded me of exploring Malta last year while attending THU. Sunny mornings there had the same vibe. Fun times, great historic city and awesome people!
Abstraction Study: Amour // Study / Shapes / Abstraction
Another day, another quick study. What can I say? Even if you don’t get out enough to regularly take your own good photos, internet is just full of nice study images. It also has a little bit of sadness in it, which is fitting to other events of today …
